| History
of the College |
|
| Established after
a decade and a half since India's attainment of freedom,
Nowgong Girls' College has been providing facilities
of higher education to women, especially of Central
Assam. It is one of the oldest women's colleges in the
state. At the time of its inception in a rented building
on September 12, 1962, it was Nowgong Women's
College. Subsequently, it was named Lal Chand Todi Girls'
College after a munificent donor and it remained so
for sometime. Finally, in 1966, it was styled Nowgong
Girls' College and shifted to its own building at its
present site. Since its very inception, the college
has been taking care of the higher education for women
in Central Assam. Keeping in view the fact that a considerable
bulk of the population of Central Assam consists of
poverty-ridden tribal communities and backward minorities,
Nowgong Girls' College has taken up the stupendous task
of awakening the people to the cause of higher education
for women in general and the poor and the backward women
in particular. Of the five districts of Central Assam,
namely Marigaon, Nagaon, Golaghat, Karbi Anglong and
N. C. Hills, which constitute the catchment area of
Nowgong Girls' College, the first one is a plain-tribe
district and the last two are hill-tribe districts.
That, thanks to its pivotal contribution to the cause
of women's higher education, the college has made its
existence felt beyond the state is borne out by the
fact that in recent years quite a number of girls from
Arunachal Pradesh have enrolled themselves as students
of this college. |

and Swahid Bhogeswari Phukanani Hostel, separate common
rooms for students and teachers, a canteen, a badminton
